NC State University wins $4.7 million grant to expand the North East Leadership Academy (NELA) at the Gateway Technology Center.

The grant, from the U.S. Department of Education, will be used to expand its efforts to train principals and assistant principals for hard-to-staff school districts in the northeastern region of the state.

"NELA allows a district like ours in eastern North Carolina to build leadership capacity," said Dr. Anthony Jackson, superintendent of Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools. "We're the winners from expansion of a great program model."

Principals like Yolanda Wiggins, who leads Winstead Avenue Elementary in Rocky Mount, got their start through NC State's North East Leadership Program, which will expand with a $4.7 million federal grant.

NC State Video Game Design Experience January 31 - March 28, 2015
The Video Game Design Experience is open to all middle school students with various ability levels and prior knowledge. Participants will learn how to create basic two dimensional computer games as well as gain a foundational understanding of what goes into the game design process.

Robotics Camp August 3-7 Application
For rising 7th-9th grade students with little or no experience with robotics or programming, this exciting new class teaches how to build and program Lego Mindstorm robots. Video Game Design Camps August 3-7 Application
The NEW 2015 Video Game Design Camps are open to rising 10th - 12th graders (morning session) and rising 7th - 9th graders (afternoon session) with various ability levels. 2015 Returning Summer Camps

NC State Middle School Veterinary Camp June 15-19
Veterinary Camp is a five day non residential camp. It is for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders interested in the field of veterinary medicine. Students will learn more about becoming a veterinary healthcare professional and provide a preview into the real and vast fields of veterinary medicine. Through presentations, demonstrations, laboratories, visits, and in-depth, hands-on activities students will discover what modern veterinary medicine is all about.
Registration Deadline is April 15th.

General Hugh Shelton Leadership Challenge June 21-26
The Shelton Leadership Challenge is a six day residential experience for rising 9th-12th grade students. Students will gain a greater understanding of what it takes to be a values-based leader. General Shelton's cornerstones of values-based leadership, honesty, integrity, compassion, diversity, and social responsibility are the foundations of the experience.
Registration Deadline is May 1st.

NC State Engineering Camps
The ECU/NC State Collaborative in partnership with the NC State College of Engineering will be offering three week-long, non-residential day camps at the Gateway Technology Center. Campers will discover what engineering is all about through fun, hands-on activities.

February 2015: Juniors take the ACT for FREE at school on March 3, 2015. These scores can be used to apply to college. This class prepares students to take advantage of this college admissions opportunity & includes dynamic, focused instruction in English, math, reading, science, & writing.

Beginning January 2015 NC State University's College of Education will begin a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) degree program through the Gateway Technology Center. NC State University's new Northeast Doctoral Cohort is an innovative Ed.D. program designed to prepare 21st Century school superintendents and district level leaders.
